Urge Senate to Expand Child Tax Credit in 2024
Tell the Senate to Pass the Child Tax Credit Bill
It was recently reported that the legislation to expand the Child Tax Credit has recently hit a roadblock in the Senate. The U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed the legislation in January, but it has yet to be voted on in the Upper House.
According to the New York Times, the sticking point seems to be the so-called "lookback provision," which enables parents to use their prior year's earnings to claim a larger tax credit. Some senators believe allowing this would discourage recipients from working more, enabling them to claim a lower income, and, thus, increase their likelihood of claiming a credit for as much as $2,000 per child.
Others have complained that the financial mechanism to support the program is misleading, since it relies on the expiration of another government incentive program to fund the enhanced Child tax credit for an additional year.
The politics behind such arguments has been perennial and it takes on greater prominence during a presidential election.
Nonetheless, we kindly request the senators work out their differences, as this program has proved invaluable in substantially reducing child poverty and hunger. Thus, we are kindly requesting Islamic Relief USA advocates to call your respective U.S. Senator and ask them to vote in favor of this legislation.
Making sure children have a higher quality of life should be a priority for every elected official, regardless of their political stripes
Urge your senators to vote YES on the expanded Child Tax Credit.
